Drivers who are ready to save money and help the environment yet aren't totally sold on the all-electric vehicle route will love a plug-in hybrid option. Unlike a regular hybrid engine, these models come with larger batteries and can travel on electricity alone for extended distances, recharging just like an electric car. However, if you are traveling long distances and don't have time to recharge, they can also run on gasoline like a normal vehicle. When it's time to buy a plug-in crossover, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a wonderful choice.

The Outlander was the world's first PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) SUV, leading the way in a rapidly growing segment. However, this model was fully redesigned last year and now includes many modern features in addition to its excellent fuel economy. Outlander drivers also get up to five drive modes, an advanced version of all-wheel drive called "All-Wheel Control," and multiple standard safety features. The new Outlander PHEV can do a little bit of everything, which is why we're excited to show you all of its top features.

  • Performance

Hybrid models have come a long way when it comes to performance, and the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is no exception. It has a 74 MPGe rating, and it can go up to 24 miles on electricity alone. But fuel efficiency isn't the model's only perk. Unlike many other plug-in hybrid models, the Outlander PHEV includes All-Wheel Control, an upgraded version of all-wheel drive that fine-tunes torque distribution between the two electric motors. This gives drivers even better control when traction is lost, and roads get slippery.

    Four Hybrid Operating Modes

There are also several different performance modes that come into play here. While there's obviously an EV-only mode, you can also drive in Series Hybrid Mode and Parallel Hybrid Mode.

Series Hybrid Mode kicks in when the battery is depleted. Unlike a normal hybrid, the Outlander PHEV does not normally use its gasoline engine to directly power the vehicle. Instead, it acts as a gasoline generator to recharge the battery on the go. This improves efficiency and keeps both electric motors running for superior control.

However, when maximum power is required, the Outlander PHEV can operate in a traditional Parallel Hybrid Mode. In this mode, the gasoline engine is connected directly to the front axle, supplementing the two electric motors to produce a combined 221 hp and making it easier to tackle inclines and show off during weekend trips.

    Selectable Drive Modes

Snow Mode paired with the AWC feature makes driving on icy roads a breeze. While it's still important to take precautions, you'll find that adverse weather conditions aren't nearly as intimidating as before.

Sport Mode is also available for those who like a little pep in their step. While Series Parallel Mode is handy when you NEED power, Sport Mode is more for showing off and having fun. It'll increase the throttle and act more like a performance vehicle than an everyday commuter.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander's PHEV's gasoline engine paired with its twin electric motors allows it to outperform the standard Outlander's turbocharged engine but with better fuel economy. Plus, you can add on a towing package, making this model capable of towing up to 1,500 pounds. Fuel efficiency no longer has to come with sacrifices thanks to the innovation from Mitsubishi.

  • Safety & Interior

The black interior and infotainment screen are shown in a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

While a good selection of driver-assist features typically comes at a price, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is different. It includes something called the "Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Suite" which includes five different driver-assist features at no cost to you. This remains true no matter what trim level you get. Even the base-level SEL trim of the Outlander PHEV includes these five features. These features include the following:

    • Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection
    • Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist
    • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
    • Lane Departure Warning
    • Automatic High Beam

    Advanced Driver-Assist Features

Let's look at some of these individually. The first feature on the list is Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which is not found on many base models from other manufacturers. This feature is especially handy for parking lot navigation. When drivers back out of a parking spot, RCTA is there to monitor the parking aisle. When you can't see anything due to vehicles on each side of your Outlander, this feature acts as an extra pair of eyes.

While it is an increasingly common feature, Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection is among the most important standard safety features on this model. Whether there's another vehicle or a pedestrian ahead of you, this feature warns drivers and stops them automatically. Blind Spot Monitoring is another essential feature that quite literally monitors blind spots and alerts drivers when it's unsafe to switch lanes.

When you choose the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, you can rely on it to keep you safe on the highway. It's equipped with any driver assistance feature you'll ever need, with no hidden fees or catches.

Are you ready for affordable luxury? Then the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the model for you. Not only does this model include 66.6 cubic feet of cargo space, but it also comes with heated seating and a heated steering wheel.

Front seaters have never gotten along so well, thanks to comfortable seats and dual-zone temperature control. Both seats include standard 8-way power controls, offering plenty of room for comfort customization. Plus, the driver's seat also includes lumbar support to help prevent fatigue and back pain. These seats come with either synthetic suede or leather, providing both comfort and heated seat compatibility no matter which texture you choose.

There are also several fun tech features in the cab. First off, drivers get eight capable speakers with the optional Mitsubishi Power Sound System. Furthermore, you'll get standard features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, hands-free Bluetooth controls, and remote vehicle access. The standard 8-inch central touchscreen gives you access to vehicle information as well as all your favorite apps for entertainment, navigation, and more. Since you'll be spending most of your time in the cab, you can count on the 2022 Outlander PHEV to keep you comfortable and entertained.

  • Exterior

Like any other Mitsubishi model, the 2022 Outlander PHEV falls in line with the "perfection" motto that the brand goes by. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels and LED lighting make it nice on its own, but its wide package selection is what really tops it all off.

    Customization Options

First off, we've got the Chrome Value Package, which comes with the following:

    • Chrome Hood Emblem
    • Chrome Tailgate Protector
    • Chrome Side-View Mirror Covers
    • Chrome Door Handle Covers

There's also the Styling Value Package, which includes these features:

    • Body Graphics
    • A Hood Emblem
    • Wheel Locks
    • Front and Rear Mudguards

In addition to these packages, you can further customize the Outlander PHEV's exterior with a variety of other package options. You can even apply singular customizations such as a hood emblem or deflectors.

    Practical Features

When you upgrade trim levels, you'll get even more features and options. For example, you can add on a tonneau cover when you upgrade to the second-level trim. While these are typically reserved for trucks only, the Outlander Tonneau cover acts as a security shield for cargo. This keeps people from seeing in, lessening the chances of being broken into.

You also gain more variety as you upgrade your trim, like the option to pick a black or chrome hood emblem and different wheel options. Whether you want roof rack rails, mudguards, or body side moldings, there are several brand-name accessories and packages to choose from. Mitsubishi makes it easy to customize your SUV to meet your needs.
