  • Overview

The 2022 Cadillac XT5 is a midsize luxury SUV that splits the difference between compact SUVs and larger options with three rows of seating. What it lacks in the number of passengers it can transport, it more than makes up for in sheer comfort and added cargo space. In similar-sized SUVs with third-row seating, passengers often lack the space needed to stretch out and enjoy the ride. The added row of seating also minimizes trunk space, which means less cargo space. So the lack of third-row seating in the Cadillac isn’t a bad thing.

In fact, it is quite difficult to find fault in the new Cadillac XT5, and there are several upsides to this luxury model. As expected, the XT5 comes with a large number of comfort and convenience features; even the base level trim is loaded with all of the goodies you would expect from the brand. And since it was just updated for 2020, the 2022 model carries over from last year without many significant changes. Still, the minor modifications go a long way in making the new model highly desirable.

  • Performance

The XT5 comes with the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that offers 235 horsepower. The optional engine is the 3.6-liter V6, which packs an impressive 310 horsepower. Should you choose the standard four-cylinder, you can expect 22 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles to the gallon on the highway, which isn’t all that bad numbers for the power you get. However, when choosing the more powerful V6, fuel efficiency decreases somewhat. With the added horsepower that the V6 offers, fuel efficiency is lowered to 21 miles to the gallon combined. Regardless of which engine you choose or which trim level, the XT5 comes standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

    Performance Features

All XT5 models enjoy automatic stop/start, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, and a Driver Mode Selector. Tour Mode is the default mode and is best used for normal driving conditions. Sport Mode can be utilized when road conditions demand more controlled responses and even steering changes to provide more control. In slick and icy conditions, the Snow/Ice Mode does a fine job aiding in acceleration by avoiding first gear for better traction. The XT5 also employs an Electric Precision Shift system, which uses a lever similar to a typical shifter but shifts gears electronically as opposed to using a mechanical connection. In a nutshell, this feature allows you to move from park to drive with the wave of your hand.

There was a time when luxury models were packed with convenience features, had beautiful styling, and the interiors were a lap of luxury, but they didn’t do so well in adverse road conditions; that type of performance just wasn’t a priority. But with the Cadillac XT5, winter driving conditions won’t be a problem should you opt for the available all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is the perfect feature for those who live in an area where the snow flies in the winter, and when incorporated with the Driver Mode Selector, white-knuckling on a slick road is a thing of the past.

  • Options

While many auto manufacturers offer several trim choices, Cadillac decided to keep things simple with the XT5 and only offer three trim levels. So you have the base model Luxury trim, the Premium Luxury trim as the next step up, and then there is the Sport trim at the top of the line.

Both the Luxury and Premium Luxury models enjoy the 2.0-liter engine standard. The V6 is an option for the Premium Luxury trim, and it is the standard engine in the Sport trim. In addition, should you utilize your Cadillac for recreational purposes and need a little towing capacity, the Smart Towing feature is an available option for both the Premium Luxury and Sport trim.

    Styling Changes

As far as exterior style, the Cadillac XT5 will differ in looks based on choices made within the trim levels. The Luxury trim level comes standard with 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels; 20-inch six-split spoke alloy wheels are an option, as are 20-inch chrome wheels and gloss black wheels. The Premium Luxury trim offers 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels with a pearl nickel finish as standard and the same wheel options as the Premium trim. The 20-inch 12-spoke alloy wheels are standard on the Sport trim, with 20-inch 12-spoke diamond cut alloy wheels as an option.

You will find the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims have standard bright brushed aluminum roof rails and rack cross rails; these are features you won’t find on the Sport trim, which adopts a blacked-out appearance. However, you can enjoy the available black molded splash guards and black roof rack cross rails on the Sport model.

    Package Options

You can also spruce up your XT5 with one of three available packages. The Platinum package is available on the Premium Luxury and Sport trim and includes a leather-wrapped instrument panel, console and door trim, Bose performance sound system, and the technology package. In addition, the Semi-Aniline leather seats add tremendous luxury to the interior.

The Onyx package is pretty much what you might guess that it is - a way to make the XT5 a black beauty. With the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims, you get to enjoy a black grille, black bodyside moldings, and, of course, 20-inch black wheels. On the other hand, the Radiant package is almost the opposite of the Onyx package. It offers a bright grille, 20-inch chrome wheels, and an illuminated cargo sill on the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims.

  • Features

The 'XT5" badge is shown on the rear of a 2022 Cadillac XT5.As you might expect in a luxury model, the XT5 enjoys plenty of creature comforts in the cabin. All models add that extra level of comfort by including a cabin air filter, humidity sensor, and dual-zone automatic climate control. In addition, the Premium Luxury and Sport trims offer standard two-way power lumbar seat controls for both driver and passenger seats.

    Convenience Features

There are plenty of convenience features to enjoy in the 2022 Cadillac XT5. Let’s start off with the eight-inch diagonal color Driver Information Center, which is an option on the two higher trim levels. This feature shows the driver various driving information such as fuel economy, speed, tire pressure, and more. It is also customizable as the driver can personalize what vehicle information is displayed. Adaptive cruise control is a system that is designed to help keep the XT5 a safe following distance from other vehicles and stay within the posted speed limit. This handy feature is an option in the Premium Luxury and Sport trims and is definitely worth checking out.

Cadillac User Experience is yet another available feature for the higher trim levels that will enhance your driving experience. This is an intuitive infotainment system designed to entertain, inform, and navigate while you are driving down the road. The system allows you to pair your smartphone with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto so you will never miss a text message, email, or phone call. In addition, it utilizes state-of-the-art voice recognition technology so that you can access everything you need with simple voice commands, which means your hands never need to leave the steering wheel and your eyes never have to look away from the road. It is also fully customizable, and your preferences are stored on a cloud-based profile.

    Safe and Comfortable

All XT5 models utilize an HD rear-vision camera; it is a standard feature that shows a high-resolution image of the area behind the Cadillac. It is a great tool that will prevent accidents, and it can be used to assist in parking. Optional HD Surround Vision uses several cameras to give you images from all aspects of the XT5; it is available for the Premium Luxury and Sport trims.

As mentioned earlier, the Cadillac XT5 does not offer a third row of seating, which is not a bad thing. Without the added seating, the XT5 is still able to seat five, and it does so with maximum comfort. Because Cadillac excluded the third-row of seats, that also left more room for a bigger trunk. The XT5 boasts 63 cubic feet of cargo space, which means you will have no problems packing up for a weekend excursion.
