There’s a reason why each and every one of us drives the vehicles we do. Some of us gravitate towards safety features, while others appreciate extra creature comforts in the cabin. Some of us need vehicles that can haul a lot of people, while others need to move a lot of stuff. Other people just need to go really, really fast at every possible opportunity. For those who love the rush of speed and the sound and fury of a big, bold engine, there is the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

If you are initially nonplussed about a new Cadillac sedan, you’re missing the point. Imagine your favorite muscle car; only make it super luxurious and put it in the executive parking garage. Or, if you subscribe to the misconception that only grandfathers drive Cadillacs, try to picture old Grandpappy doing 0-60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is both of these things - luxurious and mind-blowingly fast.

This performance sedan will blow you away with its capability behind the wheel and its Cadillac level luxury. Not only are you able to take on the track, but you will do so in comfort and style. Get ready for a new driving experience with the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

  • Performance

People tend to forget that Cadillac has been making high-performance vehicles for a very long time. In this day and age, the Escalade and the electric Lyriq are dominating the brand’s popularity contest. So, if you’re new to the brand, you can be forgiven for not knowing about the V.R series of race vehicles or the massive contributions Cadillac Racing has made to the racetrack, dating all the way back to the 1950 Le Mans. But rest assured that Cadillac very much knows its way around a high-performance vehicle.

Pure Performance From a Powerful Powertrain

Originally, the Blackwing was the name of a very specific engine, which was only offered in the CT6-V. Unfortunately, that engine wouldn’t fit in the CT5-V body, so instead, this vehicle is perfectly fitted with a supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine. The engine is definitely something to get excited about, producing 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque. If that engine description sounds familiar, it’s because General Motors has offered this particular powerplant on only its most powerful production vehicles, with the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing proudly stepping up to represent the automaker in the “Most Powerful” category.

The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, but a 10-speed automatic transmission can be optioned in. The manual version manages a fuel economy of 13 miles per gallon on the city streets and 21 miles per gallon on the highway, while the automatic maintains the city mileage and gains a bit for 22 miles per gallon on the highway. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with no all-wheel drive option offered for 2022.

The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing can easily be made track-ready. Early tests have it zooming from 0-60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds, and it can breeze around at speeds over 200 miles per hour. That’s certainly one way to liven up the morning commute!

  • Technology

The black and tan interior is shown in a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

It stands to reason that the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is an engineering masterpiece. It looks like a sedan, but it acts like a strange blend of a sports car and a muscle car, with a luxury car ride. Taking a cue from its European competitors, defining the CT5-V Blackwing is somewhat difficult, but it’s very clear that it is a force to be reckoned with.

    Innovative Braking and Design

Take, for example, the innovation in the vehicle’s brakes. Vehicles that can travel over 200 miles per hour require substantial braking power, which is why Cadillac has provided the CT5-V Blackwing with 398mm front and 373.5mm rear rotors, with six-piston Brembo brakes in the front and four-piston versions in the rear. GM notes that these specs are the largest ever fitted to a Cadillac, which makes sense. This is, after all, the most powerful Cadillac to date.

The challenges of obeying the rules of physics with this much power and speed continue beyond the process of stopping and going. Cadillac has stated that much of the engineering process requires wind-tunnel testing and racetrack runs to ensure the CT5-V Blackwing would operate as intended. This led to the addition of a front splitter that reduces lift with a rear spoiler for balance, mid-body aerodynamic enhancing panels and underbody panels that channel the air to reduce resistance.

Airflow is also an important component. Technology has taught us that things that go very fast generate a lot of heat, and the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is prepared for this inevitability. The grille has been specifically designed to increase airflow, with reeds that help with backdraft adjustments, meaning air gets to where it’s immediately needed in the radiators and airflow ducts. Secondary grilles are placed for the auxiliary charge coolers, with specially engineered smaller grilles that allow for pressure to be released and air cooling to be provided to those massive brakes.

It is clear that the engineers at Cadillac have harnessed all technology and knowledge regarding the properties of high performance to enhance the natural capabilities of the CT5-V Blackwing.

  • Interior

The tan and black seats are shown in a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

    Full of Cadillac Luxury

Of course, a Cadillac wouldn’t be a Cadillac without a luxurious interior. Drivers are able to choose from three levels of interior comfort: Base, Mid-Level, and Up-Level. Within each level, drivers are able to make choices from an available array of amenities to fashion the CT5-V Blackwing of their dreams.

For example, there are two choices when it comes to seats. Front bucket seats are designed to be fantastically comfortable, but those who plan to take their Blackwing-branded Caddy to the track may want to select the high-performance front bucket seats. This version is designed to provide support and stability for drivers in the face of high speeds and G-force, all while being extremely adjustable to give drivers and passengers just the right spot for the action. Leather and suede upholstery and seating are offered, along with carbon and soft-touch features throughout the cabin, to reduce weight while providing plenty of luxury.

    Cadillac Didn't Forget the Technology

The main feature of the cabin is a configurable 12-inch HD display that provides vehicle details, operates the infotainment and audio systems, and also provides access to the Performance Data Recorder. With this feature, drivers can time and record their runs to analyze acceleration, lap times, and sprints.

Of course, this is a car that is meant to be driven off the track as well, so features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a three-screen programmable Head-Up Display, and vehicle Surround Vision are also on board. The 15 speaker AKG audio system doesn’t just provide premium sound, either. It’s been specifically engineered from aluminum and Neodymium magnets to keep vehicle weight down for higher performance.

Cadillac has also provided CT5-V Blackwing drivers with the Driver Awareness Plus Package as a standard offering. This includes a Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam automatic headlamps. To protect your investment, an Advanced Security Package is also standard, including an alarm system, interior movement sensor, and locking steering column, fuel door, and wheel lugs. Features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Pedestrian Alert, and Rear Camera Mirror can be optioned in, as well as Automatic Parking Assist, which is only available on Blackwing vehicles with the automatic transmission.

The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing truly is the whole package, from its high-tech engineering outside to the high-performance steering wheel inside.
