  • Performance

A dark grey 2021 Mazda CX-5 is driving on a wet city street.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has both front-wheel drive (FWD) and i-ACTIV all-wheel drive (AWD) with Off-Road Traction Assist available, depending on the trim you choose. The Sport, Touring, Carbon, Carbon Turbo, and Grand Touring trims have both options to choose from, whereas the Grand Touring Reserve and the Signature are going to come with the i-ACTIV AWD and Off-Road Traction Assist exclusively. This upgraded technology is going to be really useful when the snow comes or if your next family vacation includes some low-traction roads.

    Two Different Engines

There are two different engine setups available to 2021 Mazda CX-5 buyers. The first is the SKYACTIV-G 2.5L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. When you go with this engine setup, you should expect to see 25 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway for a FWD vehicle. If you are driving an AWD vehicle with this engine setup, you’ll be getting around 24 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway.

The second engine option you have to choose from is the SKYACTIV-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder with VVT. This engine gets you even more power, with 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. If you go with this setup, you can expect to get 23 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway with FWD models or 22 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway with AWD models.

While both of these engines are excellent choices, the question of which one is best for you depends on your specific needs. Do you want more power and performance so that you can get up and go in a hurry or get out of tight spaces in a pinch, or do you prefer to save on fuel and go with a more balanced option? The choice is yours; however, we recommend you test drive both so you can see for yourself the difference in feel between these two engines.

    Transmission

Whatever engine option you choose, you will be getting a SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission. For those that like extra modes and settings, the CX-5 comes with manual shift and Sport modes available. Additionally, higher-end trims will also come with paddle shifters, which gives an added measure of shifting control while driving. The performance of the Mazda CX-5 is above and beyond for an SUV, and we think both you and your family will be pleased with the way the CX-5 drives.

  • Trims

The interior of a 2021 Mazda CX-5 is shown.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has seven different trim levels available, and two of them, the Carbon Edition and the Carbon Edition Turbo, are brand new to the 2021 line. These two trims come with distinctive looks to the interior as well as the exterior. You’ll see features that are exclusive to these two trims, such as red stitching on the leather-wrapped components as well as available red leather seats. Additionally, they come with exclusive polymetal and gray metallic paint on the outside. These two new trims are perfect for those who truly want their compact SUV to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

    Expressive Styling

The other five trim options have multiple colors available for both interior and exterior. When you choose the Signature trim level, you get access to the Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats, and these seats are proof that you don’t have to buy a high priced car for the highest level of comfort. The Signature trim also comes with genuine layered wood trimmings for added style and sophistication, as well as heated front and rear seats with three levels of adjustment plus a heated steering wheel.

Mazda realizes that it is not always cold outside, so instead of just offering seat warming options, you also get ventilated front seats with three more levels of adjustment. Your Signature trim will include an 8-way power adjustable driver seat with lumbar support so you can put the pressure exactly where you need it. The CX-5 passenger seat comes with 6-way power adjustments so your buddy or significant other can sit comfortably too. When you get the Signature trim, both front seats come with memory settings for two different drivers and positions, so you don’t have to fiddle with the settings every time you get in the car.

  • Safety

A grey 2021 Mazda CX-5 is parked on a city street.

When it comes to safety, Mazda doesn’t leave anything on the table, and the CX-5 is evidence of this. In fact, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 was given the IIHS Top Safety Pick. The 2020 model is not the only one to achieve this respected safety rating, and through the years, Mazda has earned more IIHS Top Safety Pick models than any other car manufacturer. Also, the 2021 model has a 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At Mazda, safety is not just a catchphrase; it’s a real priority.

    i-Activsense

With the 2021 Mazda CX-5, you are truly surrounded by safety. Every Mazda CX-5 comes fully equipped with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety technology, which helps you every step of the way. This technology assists with both avoiding devastating crashes as well as minimizing the impact of accidents that do happen. When it comes to a good family vehicle, useful safety features are critical.

The i-Activsense includes many different monitoring features. First, we’ve got Blind Spot Monitoring, which helps you to see other cars that are hanging out in your vehicle’s blind spot. When your CX-5 detects a vehicle in a lane you are trying to merge into, it will alert you so you can avoid an unnecessary collision. Vehicles in your blindspot are a common hazard that the i-Activsense technology can help you almost eliminate.

i-Activesense also includes a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which gives you a heads up regarding any approaching vehicles or objects that you cannot see while backing out of a parking spot. Even the most careful of drivers can’t look in every direction at all ties, but with the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert technology, it’s almost like having a personal backing assistant standing behind you, making sure you don’t miss a thing. These are the kinds of features that can save you a lot of pain and heartache (not to mention cash).

    Mazda Radar Cruise Control

The Mazda CX-5 also comes with a specialized cruise control feature. It is called the Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, and it is exactly what it sounds like. When you get on the open road, set your cruise control to move at the consistent speed of your choice. If you are following another vehicle and want to just match his speed, your CX-5 can monitor that vehicle’s speed and match it even if it speeds up, slows down, or comes to a complete stop. You will always stay a safe following distance behind that vehicle without having to worry about manually accelerating and decelerating.

Anyone who has ever had to drive through rush hour traffic knows how many fender benders happen every single day because a driver didn’t stop in time. Thanks to the Mazda Radar Cruise Control, now you don’t have to worry about being the cause of one of those fender benders, or heaven forbid an even worse accident, because your CX-5 will do all the monitoring for you. Now that’s a safety feature.

    Advanced Smart City Brake Support

Last but not least, we have the Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection. Have you ever had a person run out in front of your vehicle when you weren't expecting it? This is a particularly dangerous problem in large cities, but really this kind of thing can happen anywhere. With Mazda’s Advanced Smart City Brake Support technology, your vehicle can detect a pedestrian even before you can and bring your CX-5 to a stop so nobody gets hurt. You really have to admire a vehicle that is working to not only keep the people inside of it safe but also the people around it safe. That’s the heart of the 2021 Mazda CX-5.
